In the fourth episode of All in Good Storytime, we begin reading Annihilation, a 2014 science fiction novel by Jeff VanderMeer. This is the first novel in the Southern Reach Trilogy. In this story, we follow a team of four scientists on a mysterious mission to Area X. In our discussion of the first two sections of the book, we share our initial impressions of Area X, discuss how the narrator's views of her companions influence our opinions of them, analyze critiques of the scientific method, speculate about the government's involvement, and make numerous predictions regarding the elusive nature of Area X and its origins. Finally, we end by discussing in-depth the tower, spores, lighthouse, and hybrid brain-slime monsters.
