Smashy Road 🚗 App Review

If you like 3D pixel art, explosions, stolen cars, and flipping over tanks, this game will speak to you. It's simple, it's engaging, and it'll frustrate you as much as you'll love it.

There is something to be said about games that are a little mindless, but still completely mentally engaging. I love being able to simultaneously distract and engage my brain when it's a slow day, or a dull moment, or a lazy afternoon. It's somehow both soothing and exciting, and it fights off boredom in more ways than one.

While there's no complex puzzle and no real trick involved in winning Smashy Road—other than developing skill at the simple driving techniques and learning the general structure of the map—there's something just so engaging and weirdly soothing about flipping a cop car and watching it explode.

However, the best part of the game is definitely when you unlock a new car. Seeing how differently each car moves and being able to play around with your strengths as a virtual driver gives the game a strong replay-factor. No car is the same, and no round of Smashy Road is the same either. I found myself eager to try out all the cars, with their unique moves, acceleration, handling, etc., and was delighted by the diversity of weird, funny, and crazy vehicles at my fingertips. It'll take forever to "catch 'em all," but it won't feel impossible either—and I think that's an important balance to strike in a game, and one that is rarely struck in apps.

While it certainly won't be the most unique game you've ever played in your life, or the most addicting, Smashy Road, I think, does something better. It engages you fully without making you obsessed, and entertains without exhausting you. It's simple, it's fun, and it's the perfect app game to play when you've got a little time to kill.
